How Does Chiropractic Care Help Children And Infants?
Many parents take their children to pediatric chiropractors and swear by it, but some parents remain hesitant to bring their children as they question the overall effectiveness of chiropractic. This decision is complicated by social media influencers as some are raving fans sharing videos of their new babies getting adjusted and others sharing their strong negative opinions and fears about pediatric chiropractic.
Every year, there are over 30 million pediatric chiropractic visits in the U.S., with more than half of those visits focused on wellness – parents seeking to ensure their children grow strong, vibrant, and drug-free. In contrast, the U.S. is home to the most medicated, sickly children in history. With rising numbers of kids on prescription drugs for everything from ADHD to chronic pain. Instead of masking symptoms with drugs that come with a laundry list of side effects, millions of parents are turning to chiropractic care to address the root causes of their children’s health concerns, supporting their bodies’ innate ability to heal without the risks that come with pharmaceuticals – especially off label prescriptions for children.
Some have come to mistakenly believe that chiropractors are “spine doctors” and can only help with symptoms like headaches, neck pain, low back pain, numbness in the hand or feet, and other musculoskeletal issues like sciatica. The primary focus of chiropractic is on the nervous system. The only reason the spine is a factor in their care is due to the fact that when spinal bones get misaligned it creates tension and irritation of the nervous system. This will lead to dysfunction of the body and a decreased ability to adapt to its environment.
For the parents that may wondering, what exact conditions can pediatric chiropractic care help with, here is some of what has been documented in scientific research:
Ear infections1-32,41,89
Bed wetting33-54
ADHD55-76
Autism77-110
Asthma47,64, 111-138
Allergies37,112,137-142
Colic143-173
Constipation35,38,145,174-202
Infantile reflux110,167,178,169,200,203-214
Anxiety and depression64,109,215-232
Failure to thrive 151,214,233-237
Scoliosis238-265
Torticollis167,266-283
Improved immune system function18,284-315
This is far from an exhaustive list. There are many other condition based research studies that have shown promise with other conditions too. It’s important to know that chiropractors are not attempting to treat any of these conditions. Every positive result of chiropractic care happens due to removing neurological irritation which allows the body to function and heal at its highest potential.316-324 No matter if there is a myriad of symptoms or if the child is symptom free, it’s never too soon to ensure a child’s nervous system is functioning and adapting optimally.
It’s easier to grow healthy children than to attempt to fix broken adults.
